Pick up from your Belgrade hotel and begin your half-day sightseeing tour of Belgrade, the ‘White City’, beginning with the old fortress, Kalemegdan, strategically located overlooking the confluence of the Sava and the Danube Rivers. This story-book medieval fortress is complete with towers, battlements, ramparts – it was once the most important military stronghold in this part of Europe. Inside the walls of the fortress see its two churches, the Rose Church of Our Lady that used to be a gunpowder store, and St Petka’s Chapel, a simple stone building on the outside but with bright mosaics inside.

Stroll down the Knez Mihaila Street, a broad, pedestrianised avenue running from the Kalemegdan, lined with the elegant architecture reminiscent of many other more famous cities in central Europe. See the exterior of Princess Ljubica’s Residence, the home of a princely family and a prime example of Serbian-Balkan architecture at the start of the 19th century, and pass the National Theatre that hosts world-class performances, and the National Museum that boasts a huge range of exhibits. Walk past the Royal Palace where King Alexander and Queen Draga were murdered in their bedroom in 1903, the Parliament buildings, and the very first McDonald’s to be opened in Eastern Europe!

Continue to perhaps the city’s most popular spot, the newly consecrated and magnificent St Sava Church. Under construction for over a hundred years, the church’s interior mosaics are still unfinished but nevertheless it boasts an impressive white marble exterior and is the 3rd largest Orthodox church in the world with a dome 230 ft high that dominates Belgrade’s skyline. It is named after the 12th century saint who founded the Serbian Orthodox Church, and whose remains were burned by a Turkish ruler on this very spot. The church holds 10.000 people and its very existence is testimony to the determination of the citizens of the city to resist the Nazis and the Communists who both sought to prevent its construction.
